Higher Thyroid Hormone Levels Can Be Linked To Irregular Heartbeat
In a recent study, it was found that the high intensity of thyroid hormone in individuals can lead to an uneven heartbeat or atrial fibrillation even if the intensity were inside normal range. The hormone components are FT4 and free thyroxine. The blood levels of thyroid activating hormone of TSH which also regulate the productions of thyroid hormones and is used only for clinical practices to assess the thyroid functions. It was not associated with the threat of irregular heartbeat. The research was published in the American Heart Association`s journal Circulation. The team shared that their findings showed the fact that the levels of thyroid hormone and free thyroxine which are circulating in the blood may be an additional risk factor which can affect the atrial fibrillation. The team believes that the free thyroxine hormone levels may assist to discover the individuals who are at a higher risk.
It is known that the atrial fibrillation or irregular heartbeat affects anywhere between three to six million people in the United States of America alone and it is approximate to affect more than 12 million persons by the year 2030. The condition happens when the 2 top chambers of the heart known as atria have an irregular rhythm and they beat faster than the normal rate. There are certain symptoms such as chest pain, anxiety, sweating, heart palpitations, fatigue when exerted or exercise, dizziness, and even fainting. In some cases, the patients suffering from atrial fibrillation may not have any symptoms at all. The patients with an irregular heartbeat may be able to live with atrial fibrillation but they may experience chronic fatigue and even increase the risk of serious illness which can be fatal. These serious conditions may comprise of stroke and heart failure which can cause lifelong disability and even death. There are many medications and therapies available in the market to help treat the irregular heartbeat. These medicines can help reduce the risk of the complications and symptoms associated with atrial fibrillation.
In our human body, the thyroid gland is a gland in the neck and releases the thyroid hormone. These hormones help regulate the energy metabolism in our body. In case of patients, who have low levels of the thyroid hormone or also known as hyperthyroidism may need medicines containing the thyroid hormone to help increase their hormone levels. This also has a negative aspect in which it increases the levels of thyroxine as well.
In the earlier studies, it was seen that the risk of irregular heartbeat is high in individuals for whom the gland produces excess thyroid hormone compared to those with normal hormone levels. Also, it was unclear if the high levels within normal range also caused the irregular heartbeat. In a study, it was found that the patients with high blood levels of FT4 within the normal range were at a higher risk of developing an irregular heartbeat.
The team studied the data from 11 types of research done various countries which measured the thyroid function and the chances of occurrence of an irregular heartbeat. The researchers have been trying to find more information in regards to this condition to help provide better medications.
